High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is not just a fad

Sure, HIIT has become a very popular training method. But this is not one of those ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ fitness whims. HIIT workouts have proven to be very successful. As a personal trainer in St Kilda I’ve seen great results when incorporating this into my clients’ training regimes.

So what exactly is HIIT?

With this approach to training, you work out in intervals of varying intensity. You exercise at a moderate pace for the first interval, followed by an interval of intense training. You then continue to alternate intervals in this manner. For example, you could alternate jogging and sprinting. HIIT can be applied to all sorts of exercises. The idea is to push yourself to your maximum during high intensity intervals, alternating with less intense intervals in order to give your body a chance to recover slightly.

Why is HIIT effective?

Firstly, as the name implies, it gives you an intense workout. Secondly, both your aerobic and anaerobic endurance is improved. Thirdly, you burn more fat than you would doing a normal cardio session. An improved metabolism means your body will be burning more calories throughout the day. Another important point is that short HIIT workouts can still produce good results – something that is very appealing in today’s busy modern lifestyle.

One of the reasons why HIIT has become so popular is because it enables you to see great results in a relatively short period of time. This is especially the case when HIIT is combined with weight training. The constant change in intensity, including periods of high intensity, is the secret behind the success of HIIT.
