How I fell into the fitness industry – literally!
Read the amazing story that led Julie Griffiths (known as Jewelz) from being overweight and unfit to being a successful Coach in the Australian fitness industry and being nominated for the Australian Fitness Awards 2020.
Several years ago I fell down a flight of stairs. I smashed the base of my spine which initiated a six year ordeal of painkillers and anti-inflammatories. Because I was out of action, I gained a whopping 14 kgs. As a young woman in the prime of my life, I was dealt another severe blow: my specialist told me that my physical condition would only worsen with time.
I knew that my increased weight was impeding any hope of recovery. I could feel the added strain that was being placed on my back, hips, and knees. I decided to take decisive action and take charge of my health.
I hired a personal trainer, which was the worst and best decision I could have made.
Unfortunately, I hired a personal trainer who didn’t have a good understanding of training for the type of injuries I endured. The result? I had a relapse.
So how could this have been the best decision? It prompted me to be proactive. I decided to take on the responsibility for my own health and recovery. That meant qualifying as a personal trainer, going through to attaining a Diploma in Fitness. I lost all that additional body fat quickly, all the while increasing my fitness safely and efficiently. It’s been 13 years, and I have gone from strength to strength ever since.
